-D. Kenneth Thomas-

D. Kenneth Thomas, age 89 of Columbus Junction, formerly of Coralville, died Monday, February 12, 2007, at Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction. The son of Hugh and Jennette (Hughes) Thomas, he was born September 22, 1917, at Terrill, Iowa. He was a 1935 graduate of the Cotter High School. He served in the US Navy from 1942-46. He worked for the Iowa Highway Commission for thirty-six years. He was a member of the Cotter Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Cedar Crest Country Club, V.F.W., Scottish Rites, a 50-year member of the Columbus City Masonic Lodge and Kaaba Shrine, and a 60-year member of the Columbus Junction American Legion. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan, and in earlier years enjoyed playing softball, bowling, and golfing. He loved animals and children. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and practical jokes.

He is survived by eight nieces, Janet Pretz, Bev Gordon, Shirley Kemper, Marie Wilson, Celia McElhinney, Peggy Sever, Carol Hawkins, Elaine Mercer, five nephews, Keith, Kenny, Jim, John, and Danny Thomas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Haydn, Harold, Elmer, and Harvey; three sisters, Dorothy and two in infancy; and a longtime companion, Doris Graham.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 17, 2007, at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield; interment followed at the Cambrian Cemetery with military rites. A general memorial has been established in his name.
