Gayla Jean Van Auken Boyd, 50, of Columbus Junction, Iowa died Monday, May 28, 2007 in Columbus Junction following a courageous battle with cancer for 2 ½ years.

Funeral services were Friday, June 1, 2007, at 10:30 A.M. at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction, Iowa. Revs. Harry Swan and Catherine Whitlatch officiated. Casketbearers were Jeramie Hoag, Elijah Hoag, Levi Hoag, Pat Boyd, Doug Boyd and Bryan Martin. Honorary Casketbearers were Isaac Lukins, Mitchell Lukins, Colby Counce, Jesse Rivers, Jr., Naomi Counce and Olivia Counce. Burial was at the Columbus City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed towards the Iowa City Hospice in Gayla’s name. Sympathy notes may be left to the Boyd family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Gayla Jean Van Auken was born September 9, 1956, in Iowa City. She is the daughter of Richard and Shirley (Brown) Metzger and the late James Raymond Van Auken. On August 14, 1982, Gayla was united in marriage to Steven Craig Boyd in Columbus Junction. Gayla worked as a Nursing Assistant at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was a member of the Columbus Community Free Methodist Church. Gayla enjoyed crocheting, gardening, cooking, fishing, visiting with friends, always giving to others and especially, she loved spending time with her grandchildren. Anyone who knew Gayla was touched by her.

Gayla will be dearly missed by her husband, Steven of Columbus Junction; her daughters, Kristina Marie Boyd of Mesa, Arizona, Dawn Michelle Martin and her husband, Bryan of Ainsworth and Anna Marie Boyd of Columbus Junction; her parents, Richard and Shirley Metzger; her sisters, Peggy and Jon Hoback of Columbus Junction; Sheila Lukins and her husband, Mark of Washington, IA and Melody Counce and special friend, Jesse Rivers of Washington, IA; 2 grandchildren, Bryan Willard Martin and Samantha Marie Gomez; 2 nieces and 7 nephews; and many friends and co-workers.

Gayla was preceded in death by her father, James Raymond Van Auken; grandparents; and a nephew, Tyron Miles.
