Lee Eugene “Gene” Werner, age 78, formerly of Burlington and Grandview, Iowa, died Sunday morning, February 18, 2007, at the Hospice Comfort House at Pella, Iowa. The son of Lee and Nannie Graham Werner, he was born August 1, 1928 at Grandview. He married Nola M. Johnson on August 14, 1949 at Grandview. Gene graduated from Grandview High School in 1945. He was a farmer and cattleman.

He was a fifty year member of the Iowa Lodge No. 107 A.F. & A.M. at Columbus City as a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and KAABA Shriner. He enjoyed the Shriner’s Parade Unit. Eugene also enjoyed baseball and was an avid New York Yankee Fan. He liked playing cribbage and teaching it to others. Gene had contributed the land at Grandview for the establishment and display of the All Veterans Memorial.

He is survived by his special friend and loving longtime companion, Evelyn Bucher and her family; his three daughters, Linda J. and Jack Gooding of Pella, Rhonda L. and Esao Hashimoto of Littleton, Colorado, and Kayla J. and Dr. Gary Palmer of Kingfisher, Oklahoma; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step grandsons; and twelve step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lloyd D. Hafner; and a granddaughter, Jeanne Michelle Hafner.

The funeral ceremony for Eugene Werner will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, February 22, 2007, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello, with Pastor Rick Crooks officiating. Burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery in Grandview.

Friends may call from noon to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, concluding with a Masonic Service at 8:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals and the Pella Hospice Comfort House
