Meriel Louise Benge, age 79, of Washington, Iowa died Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at her residence after failing in health for the past two months.

Celebration of life services were held 10:30 am Friday, January 9, 2009 at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Colton Clay officiating.  Visitation was at 2:00 pm Thursday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family received friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Thursday evening.  Interment took place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.  A memorial has been established to Hospice of Washington County.  Online condolences may be sent for Meriel’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com

Meriel was born April 15, 1929 in Wayland, Iowa the daughter of Max and Bessie (Allred) McGuire.  She graduated from Wayland High School.  On February 27, 1948 Meriel was united in marriage to Richard W. Benge in Wayland, Iowa.

Meriel was a homemaker and lived all of her life in Wayland and Washington Communities.  She attended the First Christian Church in Washington.  Meriel was an avid seamstress and quilter.  She enjoyed raising her family and watching her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Ronald Benge of Grimes, Iowa; daughter, Victoria Lowe of Wayland, Iowa; daughter, Nancy Arbogast of Columbus Junction, Iowa; daughter, Jone Heyvaert and husband, Dan of Washington, Iowa; son, Robert Benge and wife, Jean of Kalona, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry McGuire and wife, Violet of Olds, Iowa; and Myron McGuire of Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

Meriel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1991, one daughter, Patricia Kuntzelman, two brothers, Emery and Roger, and an infant brother.
