-Mildred Higgins-

Mildred “Midge” (Lewis) Higgins, 89, of Davenport, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2008 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Funeral services were held at 11:30 A.M. on Thursday, March 13, 2008 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Mildred was born June 14, 1918 on a farm in rural Louisa County, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Martha (Schabillion) Lewis. Upon graduation from Columbus Junction High School, she attended Iowa Wesleyan and then moved to Davenport to attend Brown’s Business College and worked at several secretarial jobs.

She married John C. Higgins on May 20, 1941. Upon Johnnie’s return from overseas service, they lived in Chicago for a brief time before returning to Davenport. They had three children. John preceded her in death on February 20, 1955.

“Midge” worked as a secretary until her retirement in 1980. She loved to spend time with her family, dance, play cards, travel and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her children Maureen (Paul) Ryan of Marion, Iowa, Michael (Kathy) Higgins, and Sybil Yordt, all of Davenport; grandchildren Todd Andrew, Scott (Angela) Andrew, Matt Andrew, Jonna (Eric) Higgins-Freese, Darin (Sabrina) Higgins, Jenifer (James) Patten, Aeron (Marzella) Yordt, and Allison Yordt and her fiancé, D.J. Bell; great-grandchildren Leno and Saul Lopez, Noah Andrew, Tucker Andrew, Shalyn Yordt, MacKenzie Andrew, Naomi Andrew, Maggie Patten, Reuben Higgins-Freese, and an additional great-grandchild eagerly expected in September.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Raymond Lewis.
